The Central Florida PMI Chapter sponsors two Project Management Professional (PMP) Exam Preparation workshops each year for individuals wishing to prepare for the PMP Certification exam. This workshop will explain and clarify issues and topics associated with a study program for taking the PMP exam. The workshop leaders are experienced presenters and possess excellent knowledge of the subject matter they'll be presenting. Each workshop instructor is both a certified PMP and a practicing project/program manager.

The purpose of this course is to prepare the experienced project manager to take the PMI® PMP® Certification Exam and to provide the certified PMP® a review of PMI®concepts from the PMBOK® Fifth Edition. The target audience is project managers seeking PMP®certification, and project managers with a PMP® seeking a refresher course as well as a way to earn additional PDUs. Students looking to take their CAPM® exam can also take advantage of this course, as all the 47 PMI® Processes will be discussed in depth. Students taking the course to prepare for their certification exam will earn 27 contact hours for the class time, which can be used to help qualify towards their educational requirements. Students taking the course as a refresher will earn 27 PDUs.

The course length is 27 hours of instruction over three Saturdays at nine hours per day. Each Saturday begins with student sign-in at 7:30 am. Classes begin at 8 am and end at 5 pm. The course fees include a light breakfast and lunch on each Saturday, as well as the required course materials. A hard copy of the PMBOK® will be available during class for use.

Instruction is broken down into the ten knowledge areas, five process groups, and Professional Responsibility.  Each instructor is a practicing project management professional with a PMP credential at a minimum.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q. I have not had any prior (formal) PMP education and am wondering if by taking the PMP Prep Course that it would prepare me for taking the certification exam?

A. Yes, this class will prepare you to take the exam and give you the 35 contact hours you will need to qualify. You will also need to have quite a number of experience hours from your work history to qualify as well.

Q. How many people are typically in the class?

A. We typically have 20 to 30 students in a class.

Q. Does the PMP Prep Class provide both Contact Hours and PDUs?

A. You will be eligible for 35 contact hours upon completion of this course. Contact hours are for those people who are not yet a PMP.  You only get PDUs when you have passed the exam, and earned your PMP certification. In other words, you don't get to "double dip". You cannot earn both Contact Hours and PDUs from the same class.

Q. What is the recommended length of time before finishing the course and taking the exam?

A. As part of the course, we recommend the students set up study groups. These groups are usually based on geography. We have found these study groups crucial to success is maintaining a schedule to complete the study of the 10 knowledge areas, and 5 process groups.

Most students organize their group to cover portions of the PMP Exam Prep book per week. There are 12 chapters, so I would plan on 6 to 8 weeks study time prior to taking the exam.

Q. Is there anything I need to bring or prepare for the class?

A. Just bring yourself and a pencil to take notes. We will hand out the class materials on the first morning. You will receive:

  • PMBOK® Guide 5th Edition
  • Velociteach’s InAct Advantage Kit
    • Andy Crowe’s “Pass the PMP 5th Edition” textbook
    • Student Workbook
    • Study Flash Cards
    • Quick Reference Guide
    • CD Series “Conversations on the PMP Exam”
    • 3 Month Access to Insite.com (Online Study Aid with Unlimited Practice Questions)

Q. What are the eligibility requirements to sit for the exam?

A. You need to go to the Global PMI web site to view the eligibility requirements.

http://www.pmi.org/en/Certification/Project-Management-Professional-PMP.aspx

You will need to complete the application process, and be qualified to take the exam (some applications are audited). Then, you can register (and pay the fee) to take the exam.
